Back in the Box July 13, 2010 N. Heard (London, UK) I'm afraid I can't review the Slingbox Pro as I gave up trying to set it up!!! I'd originally purchased the Slingbox with a view to ensuring that I could watch the World Cup whilst away from the UK. I'm not the greatest mind when it comes to electrical equipment, but I thought that it would be fairly simple to connect a SKY HD Box and a Panasonic Flat screen HDTV to the Slingbox Pro. The instructions accompanying the Slingbox itself were very poor, bordering on useless. The Slingbox website looks great but didn't help despite being packed with technical information. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but I really hoped for a simple step by step....i.e. red plug goes in to red slot etc.
Hours (and I mean hours!)of Googling did little to help, lot's of very technical and clever people out there, but nothing straight forward and simple. If anyone reads this and can help me (in simple English), then thank you, I look forward to learning from your comments! Sling Media Slingbox Pro
Does the job, but lacks basic features. June 26, 2010 D. Laverick (Northallerton, UK) The setup can be a bit tricky, especially if you have more than a simple modem/router -> Internet setup, but it's otherwise painless.
Once connected you can stream a number of sources anywhere you want!
There are a number of inputs, and I use it for TV in the home, and checking in on security cameras whilst away, and it does the job...
Problems:
The quality of the streaming is poor - even at max settings the picture is blocky on full screen even on a small laptop, but it's fine if you want a little distraction in a window to the side of your work / browsing.
There is no Program Guide!
It's plastered all over the website, and the feature is there, but if you're in the UK, it's just a greyed out option.
To make matters worse, during setup you can tell the SlingBox to scan Digital Freeview and it lists all the channel names, but once that is done you're back in the main interface with channel numbers only - yep, just numbers!
You can manually add the channel number / name to your favourites list, but this is a huge gap in the basic functionality of the unit.
Overall, if you want to stream video or music to a mobile device (iPhone & Android are supported now, but you will need to pay again for the software) or are planning a few days away and want to keep up to date with UK TV, or monitor security feeds, it's a handy unit.
If you're thinking of buying one to extend your home media to other machines in your house, there are other products that are cheaper & better.
It looks like Sling Media have no plans to release the Slingbox HD in the UK, so we're stuck with a slightly crippled, slightly overpriced Pro as the best offering.
Get it, try it, but keep the packaging nearby just in case!
Simply brilliant June 12, 2010 Elizabeth Brown (South Africa) I love this product! I live in South Africa and was a bit worried the line speed wouldn't be fast enough but it's great. While in the UK I configured the slingbox no problem and I'm not a techie person. The instructions supplied made it really easy. When I got back to South Africa I lost connection for some reason but was up and running again after a couple of calls to the helpline. The technical support guys are truly amazing and retuned the box remotely for me which fixed the problem. If you live overseas or travel a lot and miss UK TV this product is truly amazing.
Pure Genius May 28, 2010 Mr. M. J. Lindsay 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this to transmit British TV to a holiday home in Portugal, using the internet. I chose this model because the freeview channels are built in and I don't need any other boxes. It works! The quality of the service is based on the quality of the internet connection in the UK, the quality of the internet connection in the country where you will be watching the TV, and the processing speed/graphics quality of the lap top you are using to watch the TV.
If you are going to use it for this purpose here are some hints based on my experience.
The sling box needs to be sited at an address in the UK where you have a good broadband internet connection. In the event that the sling box might need re booted someone in the UK needs access to it when you are not there. I solved this by installing it in my daughter's house.
I set mine up using my laptop whilst I was in the UK and made sure it was working before I went abroad with the lap top.
Once you are abroad, it is easy to log in to the sling box and get all the TV channels on the lap top. Changing channels is easy and you can find out what is on by logging in to Freeview's web site and getting the programming list. You can connect your lap top to a widescreen TV using the appropriate cable and it is just like watching TV in the UK. In most programmes the picture and sound is good but you can experience mild fluctuation if the internet speed dips. It is not so good for watching some of the fast moving sports as the picture seems to have difficulty sometimes keeping pace with the action. So bear in mind that although we have a good broadband service in the UK, the end result will depend on the quality of the internet service at your foreign location. I am glad I bought the sling box because I can now watch 30 plus channels of rubbish that is at least in my mother tongue!
Rubbish service from slingbox May 25, 2010 Mrs. Janet Moffat Purchased the sling box pro a while back managed to set it up without too many problems. Its now stopped streaming at speed 110 kbs which is no good for watching media i contacted sling media in anticipation of some help. guess what i was out of the 90 free help period and they suggested i may be able to purchase some online support. I asked for a guarantee that they would be able to assit me as im working out of the country.
To sum up the response i received from Slingbox was poor.
Would i recommend the product not sure perhaps if you have an it professional sitting buy your slingbox then yes.
To sum up i would not recommend a slingbox fpr people to think they can watch tv anywhere in the world, i know it doesn't work. Maybe okay if you want to stream media to a upstairs bedroom but that's the limit.
Save your money there is better equipment on the market.
