disappointed December 14, 2009 SAFletcher 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I bought this reader as soon as it was available in the UK, at first I loved it I am a big reader and always carry at least two books where ever I go as I have back problems the reader was great for carrying many books without much efford. At first there was a problem with not many books been available and only from Waterstones but over the months other places have come of line. So what is my problem I hear you ask, well I opened my reader up about 14months after buying it to find a small clear square about 2inches had appeared in the top right hand corner, and you could not read any words under this square. I contacted Sony and was told it would cost £176 to get it repaired I though as I had paid £199 for the reader this seemed a little steep more so as the new pocket reader was been sold for £150, also this held double the amount of books. Sony at first told me they would give me a good will payment which would help towards the cost of the repair, and then they refused to do this. I decided I would buy a new reader but on purchase found that you cannot transfer any books due to copywrite laws, the software is registered for one reader only and is not transferable. Therefore all new books which have been downloaded can not be used on the new readers, (a problem for anyone who likes to keep update with new technology) or who like me their reader has broke. Sony have not been helpful at all and maybe the reason they charge so much for repairs is because they know you dont have much choice the books are either wasted or read only on your computer.
Not enough books avalable November 6, 2009 H. E. Skinner (coventry) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a great piece of technology and I was delighted to recieve it for Christmas. However there aren't enough titles available and you have to buy from Waterstones. All titles are more expensive than the actual book, which I find ridiculous! A new book in Tescos will be half the price of an ebook on the waterstone's site so you're likely to buy the book! Needless to say I have largely stopped using it, Which is a shame . More competition would bring prices down and this would become far more popular
Not impressed October 20, 2009 Billy Bunter (Republic of Ireland) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this over a year ago as I buy a lot of books and this seemed like a good idea. I did not take to it. I tried to get on with it, but the page turning flicker put me off, and it didn't feel as nice as holding a book. I like to highlight my books, and write in the margins, and so on, and I couldn't highlight the text in this. When the Nintendo DS brought out 100 Classic books I got that too and found it much better as it had more realistic page turning and the page appeared more like a real page, then the Sony. I regretted that I bought it.
The Perfect Reader for a Book Lover August 27, 2009 R. Rademacher (UK) 17 out of 18 found this review helpful
I have been using the Sony Reader for about 4 months now for at least 3 hours every day (pretty much insomniac) and I am well and truly converted. I have just about every gadget known to man and if my house was burning down the only 2 things I would grab would be this and my laptop .. well ok, maybe this and my wife if she couldn't walk.
I did a lot of research into this prior to buying and I have never once been disappointed. The ebook itself is solidly built and feels durable, although I am not planning on testing that too much. The epaper screen is matte finish and doesn't pick up many smudges or fingerprints if you are careful. The contrast is good and the characters are sharp and perfectly readable (obviously this depends a little bit on the file format and font size). There is no noticeable glare in even bright light although it can be a little difficult to read in dim lighting.
The reader turns on by use of a slider at the top left to ensure that you wont turn it on or off by accident, and then further operations are performed by the many buttons surrounding it. All of the operations and lists are formed into lines that correspond with the long thin buttons down the side (these can also be used to type in a page number to jump to in a chosen document), you can then use the page turning buttons to move to a new list or menu, alternately the directional controller at the bottom right can be used to move through the options and select. The interface is very basic and don't expect anything particularly fancy, but it does the job. There are 2 dedicated page turners on the device situated on the right edge and at the bottom left. These seem to be fairly sturdy although my bottom left forward button is becoming a little soggy so I tend to alternate. There are also 3 other dedicated buttons, the button by the bottom right controller will take you back to the menu, the button below the left hand turner is for bookmarking (something I don't use as I tend to read one book from cover to cover) and the button above the left hand turner is for zooming. There are 3 zoom levels of small medium and large but this all depends on the original font size of the document. so if you upload an rtf with a font size of 15pt then this is the smallest that you will get. Personally I find 12pt text in Times to be ideal. There are a number of other functions to some of these buttons for example, pressing and holding the zoom button will rotate the display, useful for oversized pdfs.
The reader will open a number of file formats depending on your needs and these can be easily upload. I use Calibre on Linux although it is also available on windows and mac to organise and upload, it is also able to convert between a number of formats although I prefer to convert my own with third party software. I am not sure about audio however as I have never used it on this device. I use my reader for novels and such rather than work documents, textbooks etc so this may have a bearing on the format you use or choose to convert too however personally I have most of my books in rtf or epub. epub is a fantastic format which gives low file sizes including images if done correctly however converting with calibre I tend to find it makes these files quite large which slows loading time although I haven't experimented fully. Most of my books are in rtf as it is easy to convert to and edit with any text editor, I also have better control over formatting, font size etc although often special characters are messed up a bit so it may take a bit of trial and error. Using rtf also means that if I ever move to another reader I can pretty much guarantee that these files will be fine without having to be converted again. Simple text is nice too, very quick loading and good for straight novels. Unfortunately I had problems getting it to retain tag information, so on the reader I was not able to list txt files by author.
The reader has 2 memory slots for MemoryStick or SD card to expand its small internal memory of 192mb although there are limitations to allowed card size/type so read up before buying. for example the SD does not seem to accept micro SD with converter and I have a feeling 2GB may be the largest allowed size although I cannot guarantee this. The biggest problem to these cards is that more books means more processing time and books on card seem to process a little slower than those in internal memory although both take a while. When first opening a book it often takes 5 minutes or so to do internal formatting (depends on file size and format). and then if you zoom text expect to wait another 5 minutes or so. Once you finish uploading books to the reader there will also be another long wait while it processes all of the data. The exact wait depends on how many new books you are adding although even if adding a few books it can take 15 minutes or so as it checks through all of the books for changes etc. This is one of the primary reason that I STRONGLY recommend getting a mains charger, charging by usb takes about 4 hours for a full charge during which time you cannot use it, but then when you remove the usb cable it will process all of your data again regardless of whether you added new books or not. Charging by mains will take about 2 hours during which time you can still be reading and there is no processing when you are finished. Either way the battery is excellent and will last for a LONG time. I am usually able to read about 4-6 books between charges.
The prs-505 does not have any internal lighting which may or may not be important to you, there are a number of lighting options though. you can get a new cover which has a built in plexiglass light, or most book-lights will clip onto the cover. I personally use the book-light as I only use it occasionally, the battery is excellent and it works perfectly well. The plexiglass lights do look fancy, although do bear in mind that they have to have tiny imperfections/scratches in order to catch the light so will make the text a little blurred. Not a major problem as the 505 text is so crisp, but still a concern. You may also want to get a new cover. The one it comes with is quite nice and fine to start with but I have now replaced it with a more heavily padded cover that closes securely rather than relying on magnets and has pockets for spare memory cards.
There are a number of touch screen reader about at the moment and depending on what you are planning to do with your reader these may be a better option, many of these new readers have faster loading and page-turn speeds so are much better if you need to swap between documents and do highlighting etc. If like me you only intend to read one book at a time from cover to cover then there is no problem, page turning takes about a second as the display fills with black, then white then redraws the new page which is fine while reading but may be too slow if you need to flick between pages. Also bear in mind that the touch-screen film that covers new readers is never perfectly transparent so I have found that most touch-screen readers have less contrast and the text is less clear than on the 505. Although they obviously have the advantage in speed, interaction and other extras like internal side-lighting, wifi and a myriad of other gadgets that make them more useful for work than pure reading.
Ultimately this is a perfect reader for a book lover. Its sturdy, reliable with great battery life and will holds all of your books and then some. The screen is just like normal paper making the text brilliantly clear and readable. Yes it can be a little slow when uploading or formatting a new book, but a five minute wait isn't much before reading a book from cover to cover. And I would not hesitate to recommend this to any friends or family
