Sony DVD - nuff said February 12, 2010 Mr. Angelo Greeno (Essex) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this last xmas together with a Snony Bravia TV and the two go together like peaches & cream.
They instantly "recognised" each other once connected by HDMI cable and tuned themselves in to one another - other manufacturer's please take note!
Large hard disc capacity and such a doddle to program using the accompanying remote control (and I am the world's worst technophobe) Lovely crisp playback picture.
So there you have it, another quality product from Sony...they just don't seem to be able to do any wrong.
Good hardware with some niggles January 12, 2010 I. Oglesby (Warrington, UK) I have had this unit about 4 months now and in that time my region has gone through the digital switch over which meant that this unit had to be retuned (not certain if everyone has to do this when analogue is retired). When this was performed it seemed to have lose some of my series linked timers, not too bothered about anything it missed but I think it is a flaw in the unit.
I have only used this machine as a recorder to the HDD which the program gets removed once viewed. Recording off the Freeview tuner is simple view the EPG select a programme and tell it to record. On the confirmation screen detailing the time and channel you can set the series link to record all the episodes etc. Select ok and it is good to go. The only other issue I have with series link is that it will record all broadcast episodes across the channels tuned in. One of the programs I chose to series record was shown on one channel and then shown catch up on another. It recorded them all which resulted in many duplicates some weeks. This is not a problem really and is probably to be expected but I don't think Sky+ records the same episode if it shown as catch up later in the week.
The main reason I purchased this unit as opposed to some others was due to the ability to record from the scart and thus Sky. I don't have Sky+ and I am thinking of cancelling it so I don't want a new box and 12 month contract at the moment. This feature worked well and was easy to perform using the remote and on screen display. It also has a little device that can emit signals similar to the Sky remote to select the right channel and the right time. I have not used this as I only use the option to record off Sky infrequently as I can normally watch what I want from one of the catch up showings.
Sound and picture quality is a good a broadcast to me when using the default quality recording and allows for 60+ hours worth of recording. This is more then enough for me and could be increased by using a lower quality of recording.
All in all a good quality recorder that records from scart and also has a DVD player so you don't have to duplicate boxes (unless you have blu ray)
Sony 890 DVD HD recorder December 15, 2009 Temax61 (UK) I am very pleased with this. The best thing is that when you stop the DVD and then restart it, it is at the same point where it was stopped. This is the first DVD I have used that has this facility
The tuner is better than the freeview box i was using before and even channel 5 is very good.
I only thing lacking si the ability to use the same remote control for my TV.
Review of Sony RDR-HXD890 November 21, 2009 Ian Park (England) Brilliant machine there is so much you can do with it. Reception of all Freeview Channels immediately improved which I didn't expect. I can copy videos and DVD's. Make and edit DVD's, add Chapter Headings etc... and of course record so much onto the disk drive. Its great. The manual has so much in it I still havn't covered it all.
