A serious opinion from someone who tried it July 22, 2010 Fernando Miguel Cruz 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this player in a Wednesday and returned it by saturday. From what I'd read it was the best in the market, being capable of reading almost everything. Turns out that it really read almost everything, including mp4 files, wich were the main reason of my purchase. What I hadn't read before was that the mp4 files played a bit slowly sometimes and the quality of the picture wasn't always the best. I updated the firmware to the latest version, the image became wonderfull but the video and audio were out of synch, and I mean REALLY out of synch, sometimes more than 5 seconds. WD already knows this, since many others talked about this in WD forums (wich you can read by yourself at their website). It's a great player if you really want it,but I recomend you to don't update the firmware, since you can't reverse it to the original. Honest advice. I was really sad for having to return this.
Good Little Media Player July 21, 2010 twodogs (Aberdeen) This media player has to be one of the best there is.Made by Western Digital it has not just been made and put out to the market it has been followed up by firmware upgrades each of which have improved the product.
It has so far played everything I have tried to play from xvid to mkv files with no stuttering or lag.
The size of the box and remote do not give any indication of how powerful this media player is.Before I got this I was using a Sumvision HD media player and an Ellion HD player I now only use the WD player.
western digital t.v. hd July 19, 2010 Stefan THIS PRODUCT WORKS VERY WELL DELIVERY WAS VERY FAST AND I WOULD DEFINITELY BE USING THIS SERVICE AGAIN
Perfect July 12, 2010 Ric Duncombe I dont really understand avi.s or mp4s or m4/as or any of that nonsense, I wanted a player that i could download tv shows and movies on and then watch on my tv and this does the job perfectly. Its tiny, silent and you just turn it on and it works. The first time you plug a new hard drive in it says 'no storage device connected' for a bit but just let it do its business for a few minutes and it will find it. I really cant think of anything negative to say about this, oh, yes i can, for some reason you cant scan (FF or RW) mp4 files that you've ripped from dvds, no idea why and it doesnt really make a difference unless you want to skip scenes and the like but if you rip it as .avi it works fine.
5 Stars
Almost faultless but.... July 7, 2010 FLUKE It fully deserves its high rating but I had trouble with MP3's of all things - I have a fair sized set from my collection of several hundred CD's, I was disppointed that it played a lot of my mp3's with clicks and squeals and generally had poor playback.
I re-ripped the problems mp3's which took 2 solid days :-/ (with iTunes) and they played fine apart from a few that I had to convert to WMA before they would play at all, the same files mind you - just converted. Bear in mind my existing colection before I re-ripped them played just perfectly on my iPod, my new Sony mp3 player had no problem and nor did my PC - but the WD media player did, so I have to conclude it is fussy about mp3's - but not WMA it seems.
I've only owned it a couple of weeks so its not an indepth review but I am happy with it, movies of all types are quick to start and play smoothly, the audio is pretty good do with good seperation and crisp sound - even through the standard phono sockets.
All in all a good solid product but I have had issues with MP3's.
