Blu Ray Player June 19, 2010 R. Turney Seems fine! Haven't used it much. A bit iffy at times in that it seems to jam up and needs turning off and on again. Appears to be a small software glitch. They should put this right.
Do not buy June 13, 2010 P. M. Hingley (Preston, UK) Hi everyone,
I bought this blu ray player last year and have been watching both normal DVDs and Blu-ray discs for 9 months or so. Picture quality and sound are great, HOWEVER, this player is extremely prone to faults. It freezes momentarily during playback of all sorts of disks, which are themselves in perfect condition. Now I can live with this but now newer blu-ray films are coming out, the player told me I needed to update the firmware to play Avatar. I proceeded to follow the instructions on the Samsung website, and despite them telling me the update once started takes "2-3 minutes". The player was still updating two days later, with no apparent sign of finishing. We then suffered a power cut. Indeed the instructions say turning the power off can cause permanent damage, but frankly, it should have taken 2-3 minutes! As a result the player is completely unusable now.
Buy this player at you peril! It seems some people have updated it successfully, but be warned it has been reviewed by other people as glitchy, in this case a "glitch" cost me a lot of money!
Serious hardware problems June 10, 2010 Loz (UK) I think there is a serious problem with the Samsung 1580 and 1600 players. Some seem to stop working within the first couple of discs played. Look at some other reviews on here and you'll see. I personally found this problem on the 1580 even after updating the ROM of the drive. Sent it back twice and then got refunded. Avoid.
Good value for money, good picture, average sound May 29, 2010 Richard Picked this up for £[] (new) in May 2010, so shop around. Picture quality is very good over HDMI connection. Sounds is ok, but not brilliant (my SkyHD, PC, and XBox360 all sound better through the same AV amp, not sure why, but not a huge problem).
Had a small problem with the firmware update, now solved. The player shipped with firmware 2.06 which is not new enough to play current discs like Avatar. Firmware 2.07 is availabe and works fine with all current discs, and as soon as I plugged the ethernet csble in the back of the player it immediately connected to my network, found that f/w 2.07 was available and started to download. However this took 1 hour and 15 mins (!) to download and install a 35MB file, and after it finished and rebooted it hadn't worked, and was still on the older firmware. So instead I downloaded the file on a PC, copied it to a USB drive and connected it to the Blu-ray player. This worked much better, and updated sucessfully in about 4 mins. The player now players current discs like Avatar fine.
I've heard other people have the same experience with this player, so the advice is - do not attempt to update the firmware over the internet, it is unreliable and very very slow. Instead, download the latest file to a USB memory card and it should be fine.
Good value for money May 4, 2010 P. Ridgway (Mull of Galloway, Scotland) Chose this machine on the basis of price and because it was for use with a Samsung TV.
No problems and excellent picture
