Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
August DA701C is an upgraded version of the popular model DA701B added with SD/MMC card reader and USB jack, and features of UK Teletext (It is believed that only August portable TVs support Teletext in the UK at present).

It is a 7" portable LCD Freeview and analogue TV with built-in rechargeable battery, receives over 40 Freeview channels, 5 analogue channels and digital radio stations. It plays video, music, photos in MP3, WAV, MPEG4, AVI, JPEG formats directly from memory cards and via USB interface from external mass storage.

It is an ideal handheld TV and media player for holidays, cars, boats, bedrooms and kitchens and can also output TV, video and photos to a large sized screen in your home working as a Freeview box and digital media player.

Please note that there may be difficulty to receive Freeview TV signal by the included portable antenna in some areas in the UK at present where the signal is not sufficiently strong. This is due to that the Freeview service (freeview.co.uk) in the UK will not fully support portable TV antenna before completion of Digital Switchover (digitaluk.co.uk). The reception will be improving along with the progress of the Switchover Program. A signal amplifier or booster may improve reception capability in regions where the signal is marginally strong. (Please note that reception capability may also be affected by various factors such as proximity to Freeview TV/digital radio transmitters, tall building structures, thick walls, ceilings and etc.). A rooftop TV aerial may be required at present to watch Freeview channels in regions where the Switchover is yet complete.

Cant get a very good signal with our status ariel when out and about in our camper which is what we brought it for.Cant pick up freeview, only the main channels.
Also we find the screen a bit too small watching from about 6feet away.Would reccomend a larger screen.

5 out of 5 stars Good TV   February 26, 2010

Great little TV that set itself up and tuned into the TV stations automatically AND in the correct order (BBC1, then BBC2, the ITV etc) Picture and sound excellent. In contrast to the TV, the TV stand was a very cheap looking and low qulaity item and could not be assembled obviously because the parts were wrong. It didn't matter in my case because I'm not using a stand.

Not a bad product, however mine stopped working after the initial 1 year warranty expired(wonder why). It just went completly dead one day and just refuses to start.

After all the discussion about signal strength in these reviews, I had a few reservations about this product, but in the end decided to chance it and buy one anyway. Not wanting to use the rooftop aerial with it for normal viewing, I bought the SLX Gold digiTop indoor aerial as well. (I live 16 miles from our local transmitter in Hannington).

The box initialised well from the rooftop aerial (as recommended in the instructions). I then disconnected it, and tried it out in a first floor bedroom with various indoor aerials. The results were:

* using the telescopic aerial - nothing
* using the wire aerial supplied - the occasional locked picture, but pretty well unusable
* using the SLX with maximum gain - pretty good, with a clear steady picture. But the SLX needed careful alignment, and also needs a mains supply: yet another little power supply block to plug in and connect.
* I actually got best results from an old traditional design indoor aerial - no power needed. (This aerial looks like a cut down version of a rooftop aerial)

So, if you are prepared to experiment a bit, you may be able to use an indoor aerial with this tv. If it works for you, you will be rewarded with a clear, surprisingly sharp picture and very good sound, if you listen with a good pair of headphones. Playing video clips (avi) and mp3 files also produced excellent results.

All in all, a versatile and good quality product at a very reasonable price. But why, oh why, is the instruction manual so poorly laid out and confusing?!!!
